Bombardier sets course to deliver 20% growth

BOMBARDIER, which has part of its aerospace division in Belfast, plans to deliver 200 business jets and 80 commercial aircraft in 2014, up about 20% from last year's numbers.

The company delivered 238 planes last year, compared to 233 delivered in 2012.

It took net orders during 2013 for 388 airplanes, which included 305 business aircraft and a firm order from the buyer of Flexjet for 85 Learjets and 30 Challengers, parts of which are made in Northern Ireland.

The CSeries jet, the wings of which are made at a specially built facility in east Belfast, had its first flight in September and three planes are now taking part in the flight test programme.

Bombardier said that the initial ground and flight test performance results of the CSeries jetliner programme were in line with the firm's expectations.

Last month, the company warned that the CSeries would not go into commercial service until the second half of 2015, a delay which has pushed back the CS100's entry into service by some 18 to 24 months.

The Learjet 70 and 75 entered service, while the Learjet 85 programme is making solid progress and is preparing for its first flight in the coming weeks.

Overall, the French Canadian company reported a lower-than-expected quarterly profit, blaming a fall in gross margin and warning of a slowdown in revenue growth at its rail unit this year.

Bombardier Aerospace's revenues amounted to $2.9bn (£1.7bn) for the three-month period ended December 31, 2013, compared to $2.6bn (£1.5bn) for the same period last year.

For the year, revenues totalled $9.4bn (£5.6bn), compared to $8.6bn (£5.1bn) last year.

A total of 238 aircraft were delivered during the year ended December 31, 2013, compared to 233 for the previous year.

The CS100 aircraft's entry-into-service is now scheduled for the second half of 2015 and the CS300 aircraft's entry-into-service will follow approximately six months after.
